LA Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy has signed a one-year contract extension through 2024 with an option for 2025 on a free transfer from LAFC.
McCarthy left LAFC as a free agent after their MLS Cup defeat and remains in southern California to join their arch rivals on a free transfer. McCarthy was most notable for saving two penalties during LAFC’s shootout triumph over Philadelphia Union in the 2022 MLS Cup.
McCarthy was thrown into the final after Maxime Crepeau injured his leg in a last-ditch challenge in extra time, and his substitution will be remembered fondly by Black and Gold fans.
“John brings a wealth of experience, ranging from playing in the USL to being the MVP of an MLS Cup Final, that is invaluable,” LA Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said in a statement.
“He is a veteran leader who will add depth and competition at the goalkeeper position and we are excited to add him to our group.”
The 31-year-old joins the Galaxy with just under 170 club appearances, having previously played in goal for fellow MLS clubs Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union, as well as the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL.
McCarthy leaves BMO Stadium following 41 appearances for the Western Conference club, with 15 clean sheets and 45 goals allowed. McCarthy has 56 clean sheets and 193 goals conceded in his club career.
McCarthy is anticipated to fight for the starting job alongside Jonathan Bond, who started 24 games for the Gs in 2023 and allowed 46 goals.
McCarthy’s exit from LAFC comes only days after the club signed World Cup-winning and long-time Tottenham Hotspur shot-stopper Hugo Lloris to a one-year contract, likely marking the end of Crepeau’s time with the Black and Gold.
The Galaxy kick off the 2024 MLS season on February 25 at Dignity Health Sports Park against Inter Miami and Lionel Messi.
