Howard Webb was instructed not to referee Liverpool again after making a “blatant” FA Cup blunder against Arsenal

It has been over ten years since Arsenal and Liverpool last met in the FA Cup, with Sunday’s match at the Emirates being the first since the Gunners won a fifth-round meeting in February 2014.

Arsene Wenger’s team prevailed 2-1, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski scoring three years before he joined Liverpool, with Steven Gerrard’s penalty serving as a consolation for the visitors.

However, if you ask Reds fans what they remember about that game, they are likely to focus on the fact that Gerrard was not given a second chance to score from the spot.

The score was 2-1 when Oxlade-Chamberlain clearly kicked through Luis Suarez, knocking the Uruguayan to the ground and seemingly giving Liverpool their second penalty of the game, but no. To the surprise of the visitors, referee Howard Webb glanced at the event and waved play on. The decision stood because there was no VAR.

“In my opinion, it was a stonewall penalty,” Gerrard said later. “It was even more obvious than the penalty that was imposed.” The referee was right next to the incident. It’s the one you’re expecting.”

Liverpool couldn't believe they didn't get a penalty

Liverpool couldn’t believe they hadn’t been awarded a penalty.

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers called it a “blatant penalty” and said he couldn’t believe Webb didn’t give it, while the official was chastised from within the refereeing community, with ex-ref Mark Halsey saying he had too much on his plate.

“Howard has made a mistake,” Halsey told talkSPORT. He has not had a good season. He has not been the Howard Webb we are all familiar with. Perhaps he needs to take a break because he is doing too much.

Howard Webb decided not to point to the spot

Howard Webb chose not to point to the location.

“He doesn’t just referee football games; he does a lot of work outside of football.” He does a lot of talk after supper. Everyone wants Howard Webb because he refereed the World Cup [final] in 2010.

“He needs to look himself in the mirror and ask himself what he wants.” This (refereeing) is his full-time job, and he must focus on it. He must forget about his activities outside of football. He needs to put everything on the back burner and focus on what he is paid to do full-time.”

The worst criticism came from former Liverpool forward John Aldridge, who demanded that Webb never referee the Reds again.

“I was still angry about Howard Webb’s woeful decisions from the Chelsea game in December,” Aldridge wrote in the Liverpool Echo. I was still enraged that he didn’t give a penalty when Luis Suarez was hauled down in the area, and I was incensed that he didn’t send Samuel Eto’o off for a career-threatening tackle on Jordan Henderson.

“So the events of Sunday afternoon at Emirates Stadium enraged me.” Webb makes far too many bad mistakes. How many of these bad mistakes must Webb make before action is taken?
