Former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has been linked with a return to the Premier League

In an unexpected move that would cost him millions in lost income and taxes, Jordan Henderson wants to rejoin the Premier League.

The England midfielder has struggled to adjust to Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia after joining for £12 million from Liverpool last summer. Any offers this month will be seriously considered by the club.

Henderson is worse off due to Al Ettifaq’s play. After eight straight losses since November, the owners have pressured Steven Gerrard to turn the squad around.

Ian Foster, the Dammam team’s assistant manager, left last week to coach Plymouth Argyle, indicating unhappiness.

Gerrard and Foster, a former FA staffer who started coaching at Liverpool’s Academy, convinced Henderson to move to Saudi Arabia last summer in an unexpected move that didn’t go as planned.

A new lifestyle and the harsh heat and humidity of the playing field have challenged the 33-year-old. His average attendance of 7,800 per game at a 35,000-capacity stadium this season is disappointing.

He also struggled with the blowback for moving to Saudi Arabia, which was seen as a betrayal of the LGBTQ+ community.

Henderson reportedly told his teammates he was considering his options before enjoying a brief Saudi Professional League winter break vacation.

If he receives an attractive offer from the Premier League, he may take a big pay cut and write off millions in taxes due to his extreme dissatisfaction, but many clubs are struggling to meet top flight spending regulations.

Henderson makes £700,000 a week at Al Ettifaq, but the tax-free portion only applies if he remains for the whole two years.
