Pep Guardiola’s side also got goals from Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku, while Kevin De Bruyne returned from injury as they won their 12th game in a row at home.

Despite dominating the early stages, City had to wait until the 33rd minute to get through as Foden hammered into the far corner, before Alvarez doubled the lead four minutes later.

Ben Jackson redirected Oscar Bobb’s cross into his own net to make it 3-0 just before the hour mark.

Sergio Gomez and Mateo Kovacic combined to set up Foden for his second goal in the 65th minute, beating Lee Nicholls with a beautiful 20-yard effort.

Doku marked his comeback from injury by volleying in De Bruyne’s cross 16 minutes from time, putting the icing on the cake for City, who will be brimming with confidence when they face Newcastle United away on Saturday.

Huddersfield Town play Plymouth Argyle in the Championship on the same day, with Darren Moore’s side anxious for a return to form after winning just one of their last nine games.

De Bruyne returned to Manchester City’s lineup for the first time in 149 days. After suffering a hamstring injury against Burnley on the first day of the Premier League season, the midfield maestro was naturally eager to make amends.

Despite not entering the game until the 57th minute, De Bruyne finished with seven crosses, more than any other player. One of them saw him display his customary vision and execution by lofting a beautiful ball to the far post, where an unmarked Doku volleyed home to seal the rout.

Foden, once again excelling in the number 10 role, increased his season goal tally to ten with a well-taken brace.

The England forward, who has scored in the FA Cup in each of the last six seasons, had a game-high four shots, three of which were on target.
