Manchester City advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup after defeating Huddersfield Town 5-0. Phil Foden scored two goals.
Pep Guardiola’s team also received goals from Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku, and Kevin De Bruyne returned from injury to help them win their 12th consecutive home game.
Despite dominating the early stages, City had to wait until the 33rd minute for Foden to blast into the far corner, before Alvarez doubled the lead four minutes later.
Just before the hour mark, Ben Jackson diverted Oscar Bobb’s cross into his own net to make it 3-0.
In the 65th minute, Sergio Gomez and Mateo Kovacic collaborated to set up Foden for his second goal, which he beat Lee Nicholls with a superb 20-yard strike.
Doku celebrated his return from injury by volleying in De Bruyne’s cross 16 minutes from time, putting the frosting on the cake for City, who will be full of confidence when they face Newcastle United away on Saturday.
Huddersfield Town face Plymouth Argyle in the Championship on the same day, with Darren Moore’s team desperate for a win after winning only one of their previous nine games.
De Bruyne made his first appearance for Manchester City in 149 days. The midfield maestro was naturally eager to make apologies after sustaining a hamstring injury against Burnley on the first day of the Premier League season.
De Bruyne finished with seven crosses, more than any other player, despite not entering the game until the 57th minute. One of them witnessed him demonstrating his usual vision and execution by lofting a lovely ball to the far post, where an unmarked Doku volleyed home to cap the rout.
With a well-taken brace, Foden extended his season goal tally to ten for the second time this season.
The England forward, who has scored in the FA Cup in each of the previous six seasons, had four shots on goal, three of which were on target.
