Kyle Walker will continue to be Manchester City’s first-choice captain for the rest of the season, despite Kevin De Bruyne’s return to the team.
With Walker on the bench, Ruben Dias led City to a 5-0 FA Cup victory over Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
Dias eventually transferred the armband to De Bruyne as the Belgian came on as a substitute in the 57th minute.
This was De Bruyne’s first outing for City since the Premier League season began in August, when he injured his hamstring during a 3-0 victory against Burnley.
De Bruyne started the Burnley game as captain, but Walker has become Pep Guardiola’s first choice since then.
In the summer, City’s players were invited to vote on who should be part of the team’s leadership.
According to the Manchester Evening News, this voting occurred following the Burnley game.
Walker, De Bruyne, Rodri, Dias, and Bernardo Silva were the five players who received votes, in that order.
Following Sunday’s victory over Huddersfield, De Bruyne stated unequivocally that Walker will continue to lead City whenever he is on the pitch.
“I’m number two, Walks is number one,” De Bruyne stated, as reported by The Athletic.
