Kyle Walker will remain Manchester City’s first-choice captain for the rest of the season, despite Kevin De Bruyne’s return to the squad.
With Walker on the bench, Ruben Dias guided City to a 5-0 FA Cup win over Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
Dias finally handed over the armband to De Bruyne when the Belgian came on as a substitute in the 57th minute.
This was De Bruyne’s first appearance for City since the Premier League season began in August, when he hurt his hamstring during a 3-0 win over Burnley.
De Bruyne started as captain against Burnley, but Walker has since become Pep Guardiola’s first choice.
In the summer, City’s players were asked to vote on who should head the team.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the vote took place following the Burnley game.
Walker, De Bruyne, Rodri, Dias, and Bernardo Silva were the five players to get votes, in that order.
Following Sunday’s victory against Huddersfield, De Bruyne declared categorically that Walker will continue to lead City anytime he takes the field.
“I’m number two, Walks is number one,” De Bruyne told The Athletic.
