According to sources, Manchester United passed on the opportunity to sign Timo Werner ahead of Tottenham.
Timo Werner is going to Spurs on loan for the rest of the season.
Spurs are on the verge of signing the RB Leipzig striker on loan for the remainder of the season, after reaching an agreement with the Bundesliga club this weekend.
United are also trying to add to Erik ten Hag’s attacking options, and Werner, who has two goals in 14 appearances for RB Leipzig this season, was on the club’s January transfer shortlist.
However, Fabrizio Romano reports that United chose not to pursue a deal for Werner because the former Chelsea striker does not fit the profile of the attacker they are looking for.
‘It’s a loan; Spurs have a buy option, but it’s not mandatory, so they can evaluate the player before committing,’ Romano told CaughtOffside.
‘Timo is extremely hungry because he believes this is an excellent opportunity for him.
‘Manchester United also evaluated Werner, but opted not to advance because it is unclear what type of player they want.’
Manchester United mulled a move for Timo Werner during the January window.
Werner will travel to London on Monday and is anticipated to return to the Premier League over the next few days.
Spurs can also make the move permanent for €15m-20m (£12.9m-£17.2m) at the end of the season.
When asked about Werner’s impending move to Tottenham, Red Bull Soccer’s technical director, Mario Gomez, told Sport1 that it is a win-win situation for everyone.
‘Germany profits from this. We benefit from it because we get a player started.
Tottenham has informed us that he will play on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig’s head coach, Marco Rose, feels Werner can exploit the move to Spurs to strengthen his confidence and make up for his lack of playing time.
‘Timo wants match practice, something I can’t provide at the time,’ Rose explained.
‘He wants to go to the European Championships, and it would help us if he returns in peak condition under particular conditions.
‘We wish him the best and hope that he gets back on his feet and recovers confidence. That’s the most essential thing to him.
