According to insiders, Manchester United turned on the opportunity to sign Timo Werner ahead of Tottenham.
Timo Werner is joining Spurs on loan for the remainder of the season.
Spurs are on the verge of signing the RB Leipzig striker on loan for the rest of the season, having reached an agreement with the Bundesliga club this weekend.
United are also looking to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s attacking options, and Werner, who has two goals in 14 appearances for RB Leipzig this season, was on the club’s January transfer list.
According to Fabrizio Romano, United decided not to pursue a deal for Werner because the former Chelsea striker does not suit the profile of the attacker they are searching for.
‘It’s a loan; Spurs have a buy option, but it’s not required, so they can assess the player before committing,’ Romano told CaughtOffside.
“Timo is tremendously hungry because he believes this is a fantastic opportunity for him.
‘Manchester United also considered Werner, but decided not to move forward because it is unclear what type of player they want.’
Manchester United considered a move for Timo Werner during the January window.
Werner will travel to London on Monday and is expected to return to the Premier League over the next few days.
Spurs may also make the transfer permanent for €15m-20m (£12.9m-£17.2m) at the end of the season.
When asked about Werner’s upcoming transfer to Tottenham, Red Bull Soccer’s technical director, Mario Gomez, told Sport1 that it is a win-win situation for everyone.
“Germany profits from this. We benefit from it since we help a gamer get started.
Tottenham have confirmed that he will play on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig’s head coach, Marco Rose, believes Werner can use the move to Spurs to boost his confidence and compensate for a lack of playing time.
‘Timo demands match practice, which I couldn’t supply at the moment,’ Rose said.
‘He wants to compete at the European Championships, and it would help us if he could return in peak condition under specific conditions.
‘We wish him the best and hope he gets back on his feet and gains confidence. That’s the most important thing for him.
