The most encouraging update from a Liverpool perspective came from Le10Sport, which reported that Liverpool ‘would hold talks’ to sign Mbappé. The Times reports that he is ‘unimpressed’ by Real Madrid’s attempts to force the issue this month and wants to examine Premier League options.
Despite all of the politics and back and forth, there is a strong belief that he will eventually join Real Madrid. However, all indications indicate that the offer on the table from the Spanish capital is not as strong as it was a few years ago, perhaps opening the door to other contenders.
Of course, even if that is true, Liverpool is not guaranteed to be on the scene. Real Madrid might not be willing and able to match the salary of PSG, but the chain moves farther down, and Anfield managers would probably have a lesser maximum figure in mind.
Financially, Manchester City should be involved if Mbappé is interested in the Premier League. But, more than anything, Pep Guardiola may be hoping that his old rival Real Madrid will complete the transfer.
According to AS, if Real Madrid is unable to clinch a deal for Mbappé, the club is prepared to switch its focus to Erling Haaland. The athlete, it says, would depart ‘tomorrow’ because he was so keen to join.
Furthermore, the process for such a transfer is understandable. Manchester City agreed to include a release clause in Haaland’s contract, defying convention at most big English clubs — and the Spanish outlet has learned that it is’much closer’ to $110 million (£86 million/€100 million) than $220 million (£172 million/€200 million).
The release clause is essentially halved for non-domestic suitors, really opening up the path for Real Madrid to make a move. So, if Liverpool can pull off the impossible and sign Mbappé, it might be a double blow to its domestic rival.
