The victory over the third-tier club was a nice relief for the 12-time FA Cup champions, who are out of Europe and the League Cup and currently sit seventh in the Premier League.
“The FA Cup is all about winning, and it is knockout. You want to complete the work. “That’s what I said in the dressing room, ‘job done,'” United manager Erik ten Hag told ITV.
In the fourth round, United will face the winners of the third-round rematch between Newport County of League Two (fourth tier) and Eastleigh F.C. of the National League.
Ten Hag’s side escaped their eighth defeat in 14 road matches in all competitions since losing the FA Cup final to Manchester City last season.
Dalot scored in the 22nd minute against Wigan after Marcus Rashford had a shot stopped before passing the ball to the Portuguese, who took a touch and found the bottom corner of the net from just beyond the 18-yard box.
“It gave us more confidence,” Dalot added. “We needed the goal so we could remain calm and not rush to score. We made a lot and could have scored more. “It’s what we missed today.”
Fernandes extended United’s advantage in the 74th minute with a penalty after Liam Shaw clipped the captain’s foot in the box.
United also squandered plenty of opportunities.
“Oh, definitely (we should have scored more),” Ten Hag replied.
“In the first half, I believe we produced five or six excellent opportunities. I think it was excellent football. We should have taken more, but if you don’t score, you have to keep focused, which I believe we did tonight.”
Rashford briefly celebrated what he thought was a goal, but goalkeeper Sam Tickle dove to catch the ball on the line.
Fellow forward Rasmus Hojlund was disappointed by three near-misses before halftime, while winger Alejandro Garnacho had a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.
Roy Keane, a former United captain, said he “would be fuming” with Hojlund if he were Ten Hag.
