On Saturday, the Red Devils beat the Latics 3-0 at the DW Stadium, and Mainoo played a big role by standing out in the middle of the field.

Wigan put the goalie to the test early on because of the teen’s mistake, but he gained confidence as the game went on and won most of his challenges.

During the full 90 minutes, Mainoo won an amazing 10 duels and made an amazing 8 saves. He was touched 86 times and completed 90% of his passes.

At only 18, the young player has already made a name for himself as a key player in the number six spot, and Casemiro may not be able to quickly replace him.

After getting better from a hamstring injury, the Brazilian is back to some training, but boss Erik ten Hag says he might not be ready to play for a few more weeks.

This weekend, United will play Tottenham Hotspur at home in the Premier League. After that, they will have a short break for the winter. In the fourth round of the FA Cup in late January, they could play either Newport County or Eastleigh.

Wigan vs Man United: Mainoo gives Ten Hag a glimpse of brighter future

Mainoo will start both games in the defensive midfield position, and he has the chance to solidify his spot even more before a busy February.

For the club, the most important thing is to beat Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday in order to cut the gap to the Champions League spots to six points.

If teams like Arsenal and Manchester City win in the same week, the nine-point gap could get bigger. A loss or a tie won’t help their cause.
