‘What a shame’ – Bruno Fernandes’ embarrassing penalty sparks furious rant from fans

Bruno Fernandes scored a controversial penalty kick to give Manchester United a 2-0 lead over Wigan Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup.

A penalty kick was given to Erik ten Hag’s team by Fernandes in the 72nd minute of Monday’s game at the DW Stadium. This was because Wigan’s number 16 Liam Shaw touched the midfielder’s toe with his foot.

A lot of people were surprised when referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot after the 29-year-old fell in a showy way.

Many Wigan players tried to get VAR to change the ruling, but it was already made.

Soon after, Fernandes scored into the bottom left corner while Lactis goalkeeper Sam Tickle jumped the other way. The tackle and Fernandes’ goal can be seen below.

As one fan put it, “Bruno Fernandes really had to dive that low to get a penalty against a team two divisions below.” Feel sorry for Wigan. It was embarrassing for Fernandes and United.

That person said, “Bruno Fernandes isn’t even holding the right part of his foot.”

A third said, “Bruno Fernandes needs to dive against Wigan Athletic to end the game, doesn’t it?” A fourth said, “A clear dive from Bruno Fernandes with little contact.” That hit isn’t going to knock out a grown man.

Diogo Dalot and Fernandes, who scored his first goal of 2024, helped United move on to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

In the next round, Erik ten Hag’s team will play either Newport County or Eastleigh.

You have to win the FA Cup to get the prize. “You want to finish the job—those were the exact words I used in the locker room,” Ten Hag told ITV Sport after the game.

The Dutchman also said something about Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s latest takeover. Adding, “I think it’s an inspiration,” “Everyone is feeling good. It’s a journey with a lot of work to do. Some things will go wrong, but we have to stay alive.”
