Rio Ferdinand, a Manchester United great, suggested that one Liverpool player is being overhyped by supporters this season.
After a dismal campaign last season, the Reds are now three points clear at the top of the Premier League after a successful summer of transfer activity.
Liverpool responded to the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson by signing four midfielders: Alexis MacAllister, Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Ferdinand has suggested that the latter, Szoboszlai, has been overvalued since his £70 million move from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.
“I know everyone is hyping him, but I don’t think Dominik Szoboszlai has done (as well as people make out),” Ferdinand stated on his Vibe with Five YouTube show. “He’s a good player, but people are saying, ‘Oh, he’s the next [Steven] Gerrard!,’ which I haven’t seen yet.
“I see very few of their [fans’] comments. But one of my friends in my group always says it. But he is attractive.”
The Hungarian international has two league goals and two Carabao Cup goals, including an excellent opening in Liverpool’s quarter-final win over West Ham.
However, due to injury, he will be unable to add to his total on Wednesday, when Jurgen Klopp’s side faces Fulham in the first leg of the competition’s semi-final.
“Muscle, hamstring,” Klopp stated of the issue before last Sunday’s 2-0 victory against Arsenal. “We’ll have to see.
“Dom is extremely upbeat; there isn’t much discomfort, but there’s no hope for Sunday. Not for that Wednesday. Then we’ll see. After that, we hope he will return, but we don’t know.
The Reds’ victory over Arsenal, won without Szoboszlai, has earned them a home tie in the fourth round against either Norwich City or Bristol Rovers.
