Rio Ferdinand, a Manchester United great, has indicated that one Liverpool player is being overhyped by fans this season.
After a disappointing season last year, the Reds are suddenly three points clear at the top of the Premier League following a brilliant summer of recruitment activity.
Following the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, Liverpool signed four midfielders: Alexis MacAllister, Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Ferdinand claims that the latter, Szoboszlai, has been overpriced since his £70 million transfer from Bundesliga team RB Leipzig.
“I know everyone is hyping him, but I don’t think Dominik Szoboszlai has done (as well as people make out),” Ferdinand said on his Vibe with Five YouTube show. “He’s a good player, but people are saying, ‘Oh, he’s the next [Steven] Gerrard!,’ which I have yet to see.
“I see relatively few of their [fans’] comments. But one of my buddies in my group always says this. But he’s attractive.”
The Hungarian international has two league and two Carabao Cup goals, including a fantastic opening in Liverpool’s quarter-final victory over West Ham.
However, due to injury, he will be unable to add to his tally on Wednesday, when Jurgen Klopp’s side hosts Fulham in the first leg of the competition’s semi-final.
“Muscle, hamstring,” Klopp explained of the problem before last Sunday’s 2-0 win against Arsenal. “We will have to see.
“Dom is really positive; there isn’t much discomfort, but there is no hope for Sunday. Not on that Wednesday. Then we shall see. After that, we hope he returns, but we don’t know.
The Reds’ victory over Arsenal, which came without Szoboszlai, gave them a home tie in the fourth round against either Norwich City or Bristol Rovers.
