According to a new book, Giannis Antetokounmpo grew up in poverty and had to share a pair of basketball sneakers with his older brother. The athlete was raised in a suburb of the Greek capital Athens, and his parents couldn’t afford two pairs, so he had to wait for his sibling Thanasis to finish playing before wearing his size 15 sneakers. The family of seven battled to make ends meet and frequently went hungry, to the point where Giannis collapsed while training. The poor beginnings are a far cry from his current lifestyle as a great player for the Milwaukee Bucks, whom he helped win the NBA championship in May for the first time since 1971. The rags-to-riches story is detailed in Mirin Fader’s new biography, Giannis: The Improbable Rise of an NBA MVP, which was released on Tuesday.
