Mason Mount switched from Chelsea to Manchester United in a deal worth £60 million last summer. Reports suggest that the motives behind the transfer were beyond football-related factors.
After failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Chelsea, the English midfielder departed from Stamford Bridge. Despite interest from Liverpool and Arsenal, the 25-year-old ultimately chose Manchester United, signing a five-year contract with a weekly wage of £250,000.
Mason Mount became Ten Hag’s first signing during the previous summer, but his new club has seen him play a limited role due to ongoing struggles with injuries.
Since joining the Red Devils, Mount has made appearances in only 12 matches. His most recent game was against Luton in November of last year before he sustained an ιnjury during a training session.
According to the Manchester Evening News (ME𝚗), a source close to a Manchester United player confirmed that the decision to transfer Mason Mount was influenced by factors other than football.
Mount himself has acknowledged the difficulty of leaving the club he grew up with, having spent 18 years at Chelsea before joining Manchester United.
ME𝚗 also explained that Manchester United members have revealed Mount’s sensitivity towards leaving Stamford Bridge. As a result, he has refrained from granting interviews to any media outlets except for the official channels of Manchester United. Criticism and mockery from many Chelsea fans have labeled Mason Mount as a “money-hungry traitor,” but former footballer John Terry has come forward to defend his fellow player.
“There is another aspect to the transfer story. Let’s not be overly critical of Mason Mount when he returns to face Chelsea.”
Currently, Mount is in training following a four-month ιnjury layoff. Coach Ten Hag disclosed that his cherished pupil could make a comeback to the field in early April.
