English football has sparked numerous captivating discussions over the years, but few have been as contentious as the debate surrounding the choice between Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard, and Frank Lampard for the title of the best midfielder in Premier League history.
These three midfielders competed against each other during the same era, each possessing exceptional qualities.
Paul Scholes, who played for Manchester United, stands out as the most successful in terms of trophies, having won an impressive 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League medals during his playing days.
On the other hand, Gerrard and Lampard were frequently key figures in the England national team during that era, with Scholes sometimes having to adapt to fit alongside them.
According to a report by The Mirror, Thierry Henry, a legendary figure in the Premier League, expressed his admiration for Scholes when offering his opinion on the matter.
When asked about the best midfielder he ever played against, Henry wasted no time in naming Scholes as his choice, explaining the impact Scholes had on Henry’s Arsenal team at the time.
“Paul Scholes. The next one would have been, right behind, very close, Stevie G. But I have to go with Paul Scholes. He was just ahead in his head. He made Manchester United tick. Every time we were playing them, we needed to find a way to stop him. It’s true. I think Stevie G comes really close to him. But Paul Scholes would have to win,” Henry said.
Although Henry is widely regarded as the best player to have graced the Premier League, he believes that Scholes would even surpass him in that regard.
“I would have to go with Paul Scholes. I don’t think people have given him the credit he deserves. One of the best, if not the best, I’ve played against. He could do anything,” Henry remarked.
There have always been doubts about whether the England national team fully utilized Scholes’ abilities, and Henry expressed his bewilderment as to why the team wasn’t built around him.
“Unfortunately for him, when he was playing for the national team, for England, sometimes people didn’t see it like that. If I had a Paul Scholes in my team, everything would be around him. At Manchester United, they saw it like that, but I think Paul Scholes is one of the best I’ve played against in this league, and seen anywhere,” Henry added.
Scholes’ understated nature during his playing days may have contributed to him flying under the radar outside of Old Trafford, but Manchester United supporters never doubted his exceptional talent.
Throughout his incredible career, Scholes amassed a remarkable 718 appearances for United, cementing his status as a legend at the club.
