Mbappé tops the list of highest-paid players in Ligue 1Kylian Mbappé, with a gross salary of 6 million euros per month, once again becomes the highest-paid player in France, earning five times more than the players behind him, Ousmane Dembele, Marquinhos, Lucas Hernandez, and Milan Skriniar, all of whom also play for Paris Saint Germain (PSG).
In the salary list of players in Ligue 1 revealed by L’Equipe on Thursday, PSG dominates with 10 players being the highest-paid, with an average salary of 937,500 euros per month. Following them are Olympique Marseille with an average of 261,000 euros, Olympique Lyon with 180,000 euros, and Monaco with 155,000 euros.
Mbappe, Dembele, Marquinhos, Hernandez, and Skriniar are the only players with salaries above 1 million euros. The next highest earners are Donnarumma (849,500 euros), Asensio (831,000 euros), Kolo Muani (750,000 euros), Hakimi (738,600 euros), and Mukiele (700,000 euros).
Top 10 highest-paid players in Ligue 1 all belong to PSGOutside of PSG, at the 11th and 12th positions, are Aubameyang of Marseille (650,000 euros) and Ben Yedder of Monaco (650,000 euros).
Among the top 30 highest-paid French players, 18 players come from the capital club, 6 from Lyon, 5 from Marseille, and only one from Monaco. Despite all this, PSG’s wage bill is decreasing and will continue to decrease.
The financial data analysis platform Football Benchmark has calculated that PSG’s wages reduced from 729 million euros in the 2021-2022 season to 633.7 million euros in the following season, making it the second-highest in Europe, behind only Barcelona.
The latest report from Football Benchmark predicts that “there will be further improvements in the 2023-2024 season after the departure of key and expensive players such as Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Neymar, and Marco Verratti,” and this trend will continue in the upcoming season with the end of the ‘Mbappe era,’ who receives 72 million euros per year without considering bonuses.
From this total salary, excluding bonuses, contributions have to be deducted, which for the highest-paid football players can reach up to 11%. From the actual wages they receive, players have to pay taxes. In France, for the highest-paid players, taxes can go up to 45%, and they have to make an additional special contribution of 4%.
This means that a football player with a total salary of 1 million euros, after contributions and taxes, would be left with 450,000 euros. However, if the player is a foreigner, they can deduct 30% of the net income and enjoy tax exemptions in France.
