For a while now, there have been widespread reports about Christian Eriksen’s increasing dissatisfaction with his limited role at Manchester United.
In fact, the experienced midfielder directly expressed his frustrations to Erik ten Hag during a recent conversation. At the start of the international break, Eriksen spoke to Tipsbladet and admitted, “I’ve had a discussion with Erik about my unhappiness with the situation and my desire to play as much as possible. He mentioned that Kobbie Mainoo is performing well, and the rest of the midfield is also doing a good job, so there is tough competition for places.”
Naturally, there are concerns in the long run because I want to maximize my playing time. Sitting on the bench all the time is not what I aspire to.”
Mainoo’s outstanding performances have evidently overshadowed those of his more experienced counterparts. The fact that they are consistently ranked below the 18-year-old in the race for a spot in the starting eleven is a clear testament to how highly he is regarded by Ten Hag.
This sentiment is also shared by Gareth Southgate, who recently decided to promote Mainoo from England’s Under 21 team to the senior squad. As a result, Mainoo made his debut for the national team, the Three Lions, on Saturday against Brazil, a team that has won the World Cup five times, at Wembley.
In contrast, the 32-year-old Eriksen has only started 11 matches this season across all competitions, nine in the Premier League and two in the Champions League. He has also made 10 appearances as a substitute.
The difference is quite significant compared to his first season at Old Trafford, during which he started 37 matches and came off the bench seven times despite a knee injury that kept him sidelined from February to April.
Eriksen is heading toward Old Trafford exit
The indications are now strong that Eriksen’s time at Manchester United will come to an end this summer. Ben Jacobs, a reporter for GiveMeSport, anticipates additional discussions between the player and Ten Hag in the upcoming weeks. In his analysis, Jacobs stated, “In order to grasp the current state of affairs concerning Christian Eriksen following his interview, I believe there will be internal deliberations within Manchester United.”
“I think Eriksen will talk face-to-face with Erik ten Hag, and they will be very upfront about things. After that meeting, I think that Eriksen will have a clear indication of his future. “It will be the same for Sofyan Amrabat as well. I don’t think there will be a high volume of suitors within the Premier League for Eriksen.”
