In Marseille on Tuesday, France staged an impressive comeback to secure a 3-2 victory over Chile in a friendly match, with Olivier Giroud among the goal scorers.
After suffering an early setback against Germany in their previous game, conceding a goal just eight seconds into the match and eventually losing 2-0, the French team found themselves trailing once again, this time to a Marcelino Nunez strike within six minutes.
However, they quickly turned the tide with goals from Youssouf Fofana, Randal Kolo Muani, and Giroud. Dario Osorio managed to pull one back for Chile late in the game.
The win will help alleviate some of the concerns surrounding the French team following their lackluster performance against Germany. As they gear up for the European Championship in June and July, this result will provide a boost of confidence.
It’s worth noting that this was not the first-choice French lineup, as coach Didier Deschamps made nine changes, with only captain Kylian Mbappe and midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni retaining their starting positions.
The match saw Marseille right-back Jonathan Clauss and Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga both leave the field due to injuries, which is a cause for concern for their respective clubs.
Looking ahead to the Euro, where France will face the Netherlands, Austria, and Poland in the group stage, Deschamps acknowledged that the team needs to improve significantly, stating, “We will need to do things differently.”
While France faced the rιsk of back-to-back defeats for the first time since June 2015, they managed to rally and overcome an early deficit against a Chilean team preparing for the Copa America.
Nunez of Norwich City opened the scoring for Chile, but France equalized through Fofana’s deflected shot from outside the box. They took the lead when Kolo Muani headed in a cross from Theo Hernandez.
Camavinga’s ιnjury disrupted France before Kolo Muani set up Giroud for their third goal. Giroud’s goal marked his 57th international goal, making him France’s all-time leading scorer.
Friendly match, but many injuries happened.
Chile grabbed a consolation goal with a fine strike by Osorio as they prepare for the Copa America, where they will face Argentina, Peru, and Canada in the group stage.
