Manchester United’s lackluster goal-scoring record in the Premier League this season is a cause for concern. With only 39 goals scored in 28 games, they currently have the lowest goal tally among the top 13 teams. This puts them on track to have their lowest-scoring season ever, with their previous record of 49 goals set during Louis van Gaal’s final season in charge, which was known for being uneventful and unexciting.
Despite being in his debut season in the Premier League, Rasmus Hojlund is the only player to have reached double-digit goals so far. Manager Erik ten Hag was cautious about relying too heavily on a 21-year-old player who had just arrived in England after a single season in Italy. While Hojlund has performed well, last season’s top scorer Marcus Rashford has struggled and Anthony Martial has been plagued by injuries, leading to speculation about his departure from the club at the end of the current season.
New minority stakeholders INEOS are planning to bring in a striker during the summer transfer window. However, they need to be careful in their selection to avoid disrupting Hojlund’s progress with the Danish national team. Bringing in a guaranteed starter could reduce Hojlund’s playing time, while an experienced striker or a promising young talent could effectively complement the current United striker.
According to Givemesport, Manchester United is considering Evan Ferguson or Benjamin Sesko as potential options to support Hojlund. They believe these players would be a better fit than Victor Osimhen. It is reported that RB Leipzig’s Sesko and Brighton’s Ferguson are being considered, while Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee, also a target for AC Milan, is on Manchester United’s radar. It seems unlikely that they will pursue Napoli’s Osimhen, as he would come with a hefty price tag.
The recruitment direction of the club will become clearer once the entire backroom staff is assembled, and it will be interesting to see how they address their goal-scoring issues.
