With victories in the playoff finals, Georgia, Ukrаine, and Poland have secured the remaining spots in the Euro 2024 finals.
Georgia defeated Greece in a penalty shootout after the match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. Greece was considered the stronger team ahead of the playoff final in Tbilisi, Georgia. However, the former European champions couldn’t break through Georgia’s defense.
The match was tense, and even at the end of the first half, players from both teams got involved in a scuffle along the sidelines, resulting in Georgia’s substitute goalkeeper, Loria, receiving a red card.
Under the guidance of coach Gustavo Poyet, Georgia had superior ball possession but struggled to create scoring opportunities compared to the home team. After being unable to settle the score in 120 minutes of play, the match went to a penalty shootout, with Georgia winning 4-2. Georgia had 4 out of 5 successful penalties, while Greece only managed 2 out of 4.
In Euro 2024, Georgia will be in Group F with the Czech Republic, Turkey, and Portugal. Poland also couldn’t determine a winner against Wales after 120 minutes of play. The home team didn’t perform better than the visitors in terms of ball possession or shots on target. However, despite numerous attempts, Poland failed to register a single shot on target, with all 13 shots in the 120 minutes going wide.
In the first minute of extra time, Mempham received a red card, reducing the home team to 10 players. However, this didn’t have much impact as there were only 3 minutes of extra time. The match went to a penalty shootout, and all 5 Polish players successfully converted their penalties. On the Welsh side, the first 4 players scored, but James failed to beаt Szczesny in the fourth penalty. Poland won 5-4 in the shootout and secured a spot in the Euro 2024 finals.
In Euro 2024, Poland will be in Group D with Austria, France, and the Netherlands. Ukrаine won 2-1 against Iceland, which was the only playoff match that ended within the regular 90 minutes of play. Unable to host the match at home, Ukrаine chose Tarczynski Arena in Poland as the venue to face Iceland.
