Manchester United is actively seeking discussions with Wolves manager Gary O’Neil to explore the possibility of him taking on a coaching role at Old Trafford. 

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe now overseeing football operations at the club, attention has turned to a major rebuild both on and off the pitch.

The appointments of Sir Dave Brailsford, Omar Berrada, and Dan Ashworth are on the verge of being confirmed, indicating a significant shake-up in United’s coaching staff. The future of current manager Erik ten Hag is uncertain, as he has struggled to make progress this season following an impressive debut campaign. However, he will have until the end of May to prove himself, with winning the FA Cup and securing Champions League qualification likely to earn him a third season.

Nonetheless, United’s new management team is already considering alternatives, including Gareth Southgate, the current England boss. Additionally, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is known to be an admirer of former Chelsea boss Graham Potter, while Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton and Thomas Frank from Brentford also have supporters at the club.

According to ESPN, Gary O’Neil’s nаme has been discussed at boardroom level. Since taking over from Lopetegui, he has impressed with his work at Wolves. O’Neil was previously seen as unfortunate to lose his job at Bournemouth, where he had guided the team to Premier League safety.

The specific role Manchester United would offer O’Neil is unclear and may differ from the previous regime’s position given to Ten Hag. The club is keen on completely reshaping the first-team management structure and building around a head coach.

While O’Neil is aware of United’s interest, it is currently unknown whether he would be open to discussing a potential role. Since joining the club and signing a three-year contract, he has already formed a strong bond with Wolves’ fanbase.
