The Boston Celtics defeated the Charlotte Hornets 118-104 on Monday night, with Jayson Tatum scoring 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds and Sam Hauser adding 25 points on seven three-pointers.
Kristaps Porzingis scored 20 points, while Derrick White had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who have won 11 of their previous 13 games.
Hauser shot 7 of 11 from beyond the arc, and the Celtics made 19 three-pointers against the Hornets, avenging a 121-118 overtime loss in Charlotte on Nov. 20 when Miles Bridges scored a game-winning three with 6.6 seconds left.
Boston (59-16), which has already won the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, is now 27-0 this season when it makes at least 18 three-pointers per game.
Hauser quickly attributed Tatum’s hot shooting, which included numerous open looks.
“I feel like we are always making the right pass and making the extra reads,” said Hauser, who shot 7 for 11 from beyond the arc. “JT (Tatum) draws a lot of traps and and extra help and he’s able to make the right plays out of that.”
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla praised Hauser’s confidence, saying his production is a byproduct of the team’s offensive efforts.
“I think just layers of our offense is what unleashes him,” he remarked. “The guys understand that he’s a weapon in a variety of ways, and when we get to the second and third layers of our offense, especially when teams are guarding us in a specific way, it really unleashes guys like Sam.” And his teammates continue to believe in him and discover him among the layers of our offense.”
Bridges led the Hornets with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Grant Williams scored 23 and Brandon Miller had 19.
Charlotte hung tough against Boston for a while.
However, the Celtics blasted the game open in the third quarter, using their size advantage as Porzingis scored 11 points to help create a 16-point lead. Porzingis feasted on a Hornets club that was missing 7-foot centers Nick Richards and Mark Williams due to injury.
Hauser then added two dagger 3s in the fourth quarter, increasing the lead to 19. He made five 3s in the second half.
The Celtics outrebounded the smaller Hornets 51-40 and got three offensive rebounds on one fourth-quarter play before White made a driving layup to put Boston ahead 111-96 with 5:37 remaining. The Hornets’ expressions were filled with frustration after failing to corral a rebound.
Hornets coach Steve Clifford noted his team struggled to set its defensive at various points throughout the game.
“The fastbreak points are totally misleading,” Clifford stated. “They only had seven, but they kept us on our heels for so many possessions because we couldn’t get ahead of the ball and set our defense. To me, seeing them play is something you must do. They’re maybe tenth in fastbreak points, but they move the ball up the court and into things quickly, and those were our worst possessions tonight.”
