Bobby Portis scored 30 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had a career-high five steals to help the Milwaukee Bucks defeat the Orlando Magic 117-99 on Wednesday night.
The Bucks played the night after Antetokounmpo departed a 104-91 win over the Boston Celtics due to a pain in his left calf. The Bucks confirmed Wednesday that the two-time MVP would miss the remaining three regular-season games, but his availability for the start of the playoffs is unknown.
“No timeline or anything like that, but we’ve got the best team working with him,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said before the game. “No one will work harder than him. You are aware of this. He will return when he is expected to. “We’ll find out when that happens.”
Damian Lillard scored 29 points and dished out nine assists for the Bucks, who improved to 4-3 in games without Antetokounmpo this season. Jae Crowder tallied 14 points off the bench. Pat Beverley recorded 13 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Milwaukee was also missing Khris Middleton, who has been sidelined for 16 games this season due to a sprained left ankle.
“We’re a deep team,” Lillard said. “Obviously Giannis is the head of the snake. When he’s out there, we’re at our best. But we’ve got a lot of guys in our locker room. We’ve got vets, and I think tonight, we understood what the mission was. We knew that we were going to be a couple of guys down – Giannis and Khris. We knew how we had to play. We knew what kind of energy we needed to have. I thought we came out and played that way from the start.”
Milwaukee (49-31) is 1 1/2 games ahead of New York (47-32) and two games ahead of Cleveland (47-33) in the race for the Eastern Conference’s second playoff slot, trailing only the Boston Celtics, who have already clinched the NBA’s best regular-season record.
The Magic (46-34) have dropped two consecutive and three of four games as they attempt to secure one of the Eastern Conference’s top six spots and avoid a play-in predicament. Orlando is aiming for its first postseason berth since 2020, and only its third since 2012.
In the last two regular-season games, Orlando will travel to Philadelphia on Friday and host Milwaukee on Sunday.
“I think those games will be very similar to the game we played tonight,” said Cole Anthony, who led the Magic with 23 points. “Tonight was a playoff atmosphere. The fans were loud. The refs, they were kind of letting us play. And we played against a really good team. That’s how it’s going to be when we get to the playoffs.”
Paolo Banchero led the Magic with 20 points, followed by Jalen Suggs with 18. Franz Wagner of Orlando missed his second consecutive game due to a sprained right ankle.
The Magic scored the game’s opening five points, but the Bucks responded with a 7-0 run. The Magic tied the game a couple of times during the following 2 1/2 minutes, but never lead again.
Portis scored 24 points and four steals in the first half alone, helping the Bucks to a 64-50 lead before halftime. In the first 1 1/2 quarters of the game, Orlando committed 10 turnovers, while the Bucks outscored the Magic 16-0 in points off turnovers.
“They did a great job of capitalizing off every single mistake we made,” he said.
The Bucks kept their double-digit lead throughout the second half.
A.J. Green, a Bucks reserve guard, played 15 minutes before leaving with a sprained left ankle.
