Los Angeles Lakers superstar Anthony Davis reflected on the team’s season and shared his thoughts on what needs to be done to bounce back stronger next year.
The Los Angeles Lakers were unable to replicate their success from the previous year and were eliminated from the 2024 NBA playoffs in the first round. As a result, the team now faces numerous questions. However, Anthony Davis believes that the front office should make an effort to retain the current roster for the upcoming season.
According to Davis, continuity is crucial. He highlighted that many of their players were sidelined due to injuries, including Rui Hachimura, Gabe, Vando, and C-Wood. Injuries plagued the Lakers throughout the regular season, leading them to settle for a Play-In spot and an early matchup against the reigning champions, the Denver Nuggets, in the postseason. Despite this, Davis disagrees with the notion that the Lakers lack the necessary talent to compete against top contenders. He believes that with time, the current Lakers team can reach championship-level performance.
Towards the end of the season, Davis feels that the team found something promising with their lineup. While acknowledging that some players in the locker room have decisions to make, he emphasizes the importance of keeping the core intact to maintain competitiveness for championships. Davis draws from his experience in New Orleans, where constant teammate turnover made it difficult to build a championship-caliber team.
As the Lakers look ahead to the 2024-25 NBA season, they already made a significant decision by parting ways with head coach Darvin Ham following their playoff exit. The next step is to find a new coach, but there are other important matters to address. One major question revolves around LeBron James’ future, as he has a player option for the next season and is considering his options before the June 29 deadline.
The roster could undergo further changes during the offseason, with D’Angelo Russell’s contract expiring and uncertainty surrounding his future due to a decline in his performance during the playoffs. Whether the front office follows Davis’ advice and keeps the current core or opts for a major shakeup remains to be seen.
