In his 19th season in the NBA, Carmelo Anthony is aiming to win his first championship alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook.
The Los Angeles Lakers’ quest to return to the championship spotlight has been bolstered by the addition of Carmelo Anthony.
The team’s Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager, Rob Pelinka, announced the signing on Friday, August 6, with the specific terms of the deal undisclosed, following team policy.
As a member of the esteemed 2003 NBA draft class, Anthony enters his 19th season with career averages of 23.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. He currently holds the 10th spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with 27,370 career points.
Having been selected as an NBA All-Star ten times, Anthony also received the inaugural Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion distinction this year. During his tenure with the Portland Trail Blazers, he averaged 13.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, while shooting 40.9 percent from beyond the arc.
His quick release and skilled ball handling will be valuable assets coming off the bench, as the Lakers have emphasized that Anthony needs to be ready to “make sacrifices” for the team’s quest to reach the NBA Finals, especially after their early exit from last season’s playoffs.
Anthony demonstrated a willingness to do so during his time in Portland, but he will need to step it up even further if he wants to maximize his chances at winning an NBA title, which is likely his last opportunity to do so.
