LeBron James’ future with the Los Angeles Lakers may depend on the team’s actions during the upcoming off-season, particularly regarding the potential drafting of his son, Bronny James. Shams Charania of The Athletic stated on The Pat McAfee Show that James intends to play for two more seasons, the Lakers want to retain him, and they are interested in bringing his son into the organization through the NBA Draft.
While LeBron has expressed his desire to play on the same team as his son, he acknowledged that Bronny ultimately has the freedom to decide his own career path. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN added that the idea of them playing together is no longer a top priority for LeBron.
Despite this change in priority, it would still be beneficial for the Lakers to consider using their second-round pick to select Bronny (No. 55 overall), as it would increase the likelihood of LeBron staying with the team for the rest of his career.
According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, the Lakers want to bring LeBron back on any terms he desires, which could include a significant financial offer of up to $164 million over three years. Additionally, they may pursue players like Trae Young or Klay Thompson during the off-season to strengthen the team.
While LeBron may have softened his stance on playing with his son, the fact that he mentioned it initially indicates its importance to him. Bronny faced challenges in his collegiate career due to a cardiac arrest caused by a congenital heart defect. If the Lakers were to draft him, they would understand that he still needs to develop and improve as a player. However, acquiring him would demonstrate the organization’s commitment to keeping LeBron and striving for championships.
On the court, bringing Bronny to the Lakers would ensure that LeBron continues to contribute his impressive statistics, including 25.7 points per game, 8.3 assists, 7.3 rebounds, a 54 percent shooting percentage from the paint, and a 41 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc. This would greatly benefit a Lakers team determined to win another championship in the near future.
