A major free-agency option could become available for the Los Angeles Lakers, and it’s a familiar face. Chris Paul may hit free agency this year, and if so, he might join LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report and Jovan Buha of The Athletic, Paul might join the Lakers if he becomes a free agent.
“I would be remiss not to mention Chris Paul as a real possibility,” Pincus remarked on Buha’s Block. “There is a good probability he is traded or just cut by the Warriors. He and LeBron clearly share a tight relationship. There exists a scenario in which the Lakers sign Chris Paul. This makes a lot of sense to me. Is Chris asking for the bare minimum? I do not know. I don’t want to say he’s inexpensive for the Lakers, but in the absence of a better offer, I could see it.”
The Lakers acquired Paul in 2011 in a blockbuster transaction that was subsequently vetoed by the league shortly after it was agreed upon. Given Paul’s age, adding him now would undoubtedly have a different impact than it did before. However, given his history with the organization and his connection with LeBron, it would feel like destiny had been realized.
Paul, like any other player his age, is no longer the same, but he was productive at Golden State, averaging 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game. Unfortunately, it was for a Warriors squad whose season was not particularly successful.
Paul might not necessarily be the game-changer he was in 2011, but he would provide a consistent presence that the Lakers could likely benefit from.
