Mbappe has been wearing the captain’s armband for the French national team since March 2023, after goalkeeper Hugo Lloris announced his retirement. The new star who joined Real Madrid is expected to play a key role at EURO 2024 this summer, with France’s opening match scheduled for Monday, June 17.
However, Mbappe’s absence from training on Saturday has raised concerns about the possibility of him being injured. Some sources claim that the striker may be dealing with a muscular issue. This is an added headache for coach Didier Deschamps, as a number of Les Bleus’ key players like Kingsley Coman, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Adrien Rabiot are also facing fitness issues.
In France’s final friendly match before EURO 2024, they disappointingly drew 0-0 with Canada. In this game, Mbappe only came on as a substitute in the 74th minute.
However, L’Équipe journalist Giovanni Castaldi has tried to allay the concerns about Mbappe. He stated that the 25-year-old was dealing with a back problem and was rested from training as a precaution ahead of the Canada match. Nevertheless, Mbappe’s availability for France’s EURO 2024 group stage opener against Austria “is not in doubt”.
Mbappe’s participation in the tournament comes just weeks after the confirmation that he will be joining Real Madrid on a free transfer. On his personal account, Mbappe wrote: “The dream has become a reality. I am incredibly happy and proud to be joining the club of my dreams, Real Madrid.”
“No one can understand how excited I am right now. I can’t wait to meet you, the Madridistas, and thank you for your amazing support. Hala Madrid!”
