Spain’s players were seen refraining from singing the national anthem ahead of their Euro 2024 opener against Croatia in Berlin.
Before the Group B match at the Olympiastadion, both countries’ anthems were played.
However, no Spanish players were seen singing their song, ‘La Marcha Real’, leaving many fans on social media perplexed.
The anthem, created by Manuel de Espinosa de los Monteros in 1771 before becoming Spain’s trademark track under Queen Isabella II, is one of four in the world without lyrics, along with San Marino, Kosovo, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It did, however, have words added by General Franco during his reign as ruler from 1938 to 1973.
However, when he was no longer in office, the lyrics were removed to eliminate any relation with Franco and his tyranny.
According to Metro, lyrics have been suggested, with the Spanish Olympic Committee attempting to include ‘Viva Espana’ but being rejected due to the term’s association with Franco.
Some supporters sing unofficial songs in the stands, but the players, who represent places such as Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Tenerife, do not participate and instead keep mute.
Spain, a three-time victor of the competition, has been drawn in Group B alongside Croatia, Italy, and Albania for the final.
Luis de la Fuente’s squad took a 3-0 lead in the first half of their first game with to goals from captain Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz, and Dani Carvajal.
