After a dreary draw with Denmark, England missed out on the chance to advance to the round of 16 as group champions with one game remaining.
Despite struggling in the second part of the opener against Serbia, Gareth Southgate chose to use the same team against Denmark, whom England defeated in the semi-final at Wembley Stadium in 2021.
Southgate rejected suggestions to leave out Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden, and after a difficult start, the Three Lions settled down and went ahead 1-0 thanks to Harry Kane’s 64th international goal.
Morten Hjulmand equalised in the 34th minute with a superb long-range strike, and England’s performance deteriorated further.
But how did England’s players perform at the Frankfurt Arena?
Jordan Pickford – 6.
Became England’s record appearance maker in big competitions, and put on another strong performance between the sticks. There is no blame associated to the aim.
Kyle Walker – 6
He experienced an early injury scare as his ankle looked to give way on the turf. Did a terrific job for Kane’s opener by pickpocketing Victor Kristiansen down the right.
John Stones – Six
There were a few sloppy moments, but the defense was generally solid, especially with crosses into the box.
Marc Guehi – 7
In only his second start in a major competition, he appeared confident once again. He had one tense moment but recovered admirably. Still only 23, he is expected to be a regular in England’s backline for many years.
Kieran Trippier – 5
Continues to perform admirably at left-back, although you get the impression that a fit Luke Shaw would offer the squad far more balance.
Declan Rice – 5
The Arsenal player produced a handful of crucial interceptions but misplaced more passes than usual.
Trent Alexander-Arnold – 4
Played several great passes between the lines, but it appears like the midfield experiment is not working. Conor Gallagher replaced him in the 53rd minute.
Jude Bellingham – 5
He wasn’t able to take the game by the scruff of the neck like he usually does, and he didn’t get going.
Bukayo Saka – 5
Denmark certainly had a strategy for him after witnessing the damage he caused to Serbia in the first game. He posed a threat by rushing in behind, but it was not his finest England performance.
Phil Foden – 5.
Showed some potential when he appeared in his preferred places, including a slaloming run in the first half and a strike against the post in the second. But we’re still not seeing him shine on the world stage.
Harry Kane – 5.
The skipper scored his 64th England goal with a clinical left-footed finish, although his entire performance was not particularly outstanding. He handed up the ball cheaply from a throw-in for Denmark’s equalizer, and his drop deep left England a touch short on attack. We’ve taken off for Watkins.
Subs:
Conor Gallagher – 5.
Came on for Alexander-Arnold and was booked shortly after entering the fight.
Ollie Watkins – 6
Brought on for Kane and instantly stretched the game with persistent running in behind, presenting Denmark with a fresh challenge.
Jarrod Bowen – 5.
Unlike against Serbia, struggled to make a significant impression.
Eberechi Eze – 5
With a pass in behind that just escaped Watkins, we get a peek of what he’s about.
