How does one celebrate their first NBA championship? If you’re Giannis Antetokounmpo, you get yourself a new watch.
On Thursday morning, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar arrived at the team’s celebratory parade wearing a brand-new Rolex Sky-Dweller watch. The Finals MVP has proven to be a watch connoisseur over the last year, and his latest timepiece just adds to that reputation.
Whereas other NBA players like costly, iced-out pieces or flamboyant labels like Richard Mille or Jacob & Co., Antetokounmpo displays surprisingly mature taste in clocks. He may be young, but he is swiftly developing what could be one of the most respected watch collections in his sport.
While Rolex is far from unpopular among NBA players, the Sky-Dweller is an unusual choice. It’s easily one of the most underappreciated pieces produced by the renowned Swiss company, and it hints at Antetokounmpo’s more thoughtful approach to watch collecting than many of his other sportsmen.
With a price tag of $14,800, it is a sophisticated timepiece. It also happens to be the watch worn by Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player of all time.
The Sky-Dweller, which debuted in 2012, is one of Rolex’s most current models, as well as one of the largest and most unusual clocks available today. Many Rolex buyers overlook this unique combination of a dress watch and a tool watch, Rolex’s first and only annual calendar timepiece with dual time zones.
The classic Rolex fluted bezel, popularised by watches such as the Day-Date, is functional on the Sky-Dweller. It is known as the ‘Ring Command Bezel’ by Rolex and is used in conjunction with the screw-down crown to alter the two time zones, as well as the date and month.
Unlike many of Rolex’s other timepieces, the Sky-Dweller has never been available in straight stainless steel, instead being entirely made of precious metal (particularly, gold) or containing a combination of gold and steel. Giannis’ Sky-Dweller, for example, is constructed of ‘White Rolesor’, a blend of Rolex’s hallmark Oystersteel and 18ct white gold, and comes with an Oystersteel bracelet.
In addition to collecting the Bill Russell MVP Award for his performance in the Bucks’ 2021 NBA Finals victory, Antetokounmpo received his Sky-Dweller to remember the event.
