Even NBA stars require vacations from time to time, and Klay Thompson took one Thursday night while relaxing before the Warriors’ game against the Portland Trail Blazers.
However, two young fans and one devoted parent in attendance at Moda Centre were upset to find Thompson would be on the bench, leaving them to cheer on the Splash Brothers’ teammates while wearing his No. 1 Washington State jersey.
Joe Walker of Spokane, Wash., told NBC Sports Bay Area that he bought Warriors-Blazers tickets for his children, Gus and Mac, as a Christmas present in November. Thompson is the boys’ favourite player, and the Walkers are all “huge” Washington State fans.
When Warriors senior vice president of communications Raymond Ridder learned about the Walker family’s situation, he promptly contacted Joe Walker via X, formerly known as Twitter.
What followed was pure joy, as Thompson and several other Warriors players made amends to the young fans by meeting with them after the 100-92 win over the Blazers.
After all was said and done, Joe Walker made sure Dub Nation knew who they should thank: Ridder.
What started off as a disappointing night for the Walker family changed into pure joy when they met not only their favourite player, but an entire Golden State squad eager to provide them with a memorable experience.
