Klay Thompson is poised to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million deal through a sign-and-trade arrangement involving the Golden State Warriors and Charlotte Hornets, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
In this transaction, the Warriors will receive two second-round picks from Dallas to complete the trade.
Thompson, a fixture with the Warriors for 13 seasons, signed a substantial five-year, $189.9 million contract in 2019 despite enduring a torn ACL that sidelined him for the entire 2019-20 season. His return was further delayed by an Achilles injury, which limited his playtime over the subsequent seasons.
Since his comeback in January 2021, Thompson has shown resilience in his shooting ability, hitting an impressive 41.2% from beyond the arc in the 2022-23 season. However, his defensive presence, once a cornerstone of his game, has waned in recent years.
The move signals a strategic shift for the Warriors under the constraints of the new collective bargaining agreement, pushing them to consider roster flexibility amidst hefty luxury tax implications. Negotiations with Thompson stalled as Golden State pursued other avenues, ultimately allowing Dallas to swoop in and secure the seasoned player.
Thompson’s addition to the Mavericks, alongside stars like Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving, promises to bolster their offensive prowess significantly, setting the stage for a formidable challenge in the competitive landscape of the NBA.
