The match didn’t come without setbacks, though. Most importantly, the Selecao will be without superstar attacker Vinicius Jr against La Celeste in the quarterfinals. The Real Madrid winger picked up his second yellow card of the group stage, and as a result, will be suspended for accumulation.
Midfielders Bruno Guimares and Joao Gomes also found themselves picking up yellows, with a match that had a total of 33 () fouls.
Hey, It doesn’t need to be pretty. Both jobs are done done, Brazil have advanced, as have Colombia. Time to focus on the knockouts.
Goalkeeper and Defense:
Alisson (6/10)
Will be disappointed to have been defeated by a free kick, but it was a spectacular strike. There was little he could do.
Danilo (6/10):
Continues to underwhelm in transition, but was clearly sound.
Marquinho (7/10):
The Selecao veteran delivered a vintage performance. He was unstoppable defensively and a wall in the backfield.
Edero Militao (6/10):
He did his job but did not stand out. Not a poor performance, by any means.
Wendell (6/10):
Frequently found himself on the wrong end of a pass. Not a good performance.
Midfield
Bruno Guimares (7/10):
The pitch’s center remains solid as usual. Ran the show but received an unnecessary yellow card.
João Gomes (6/10):
Continues to impress, demonstrating why Dorival has chosen him ahead of others. However, there was some sloppy yellow in the early half.
Lucas Paqueta(4/10):
Subbed out at halftime. Completely ineffective.
Attack
Raphinha (8/10):
Stunning free kick and a menace throughout the evening. demonstrated why he deserves to be in the XI.
Rodrygo (5/10):
Once again, he is not a striker; stop playing him there. Not a fantastic performance, but he is out of position. Same thing, different match.
Vinicius Junior (5/10):
Suspended for the quarterfinals against Uruguay after receiving his second yellow of the tournament. Their boss has been sloppy. This might be a huge blow.
Subs & Manager
Savio (6/10):
He didn’t offer the same spark as he did on the first matchday.
Ederson (6/10):
Made his Selecao debut during the tournament. Congratulations to the kid, but he didn’t contribute anything to the game.
Andrea Pereiera (5/10):
Did nothing to help them in the second half.
Endrick (n/a):
I subbed on late.
Dorival Jr. (5/10):
That was fine. Set pieces can definitely win games, and Raphinha’s free kick was incredible. However, their offensive remained lifeless after that point. Just disappointed with the amount of talent they have.
