Buddy Hield is headed to the Bay Area after the Golden State Warriors completed a sign-and-trade deal with the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday.
Hield inked a four-year contract with the Warriors valued at approximately $21 million in guaranteed money. The 31-year-old guard, who averaged 12.1 points with a 38.6% three-point shooting percentage last season, finalized his decision after a discussion with Warriors coach Steve Kerr on Wednesday, according to The Athletic. He confirmed his choice on Thursday after deliberating overnight.
When asked why he chose the Warriors over other interested teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, Hield cited the opportunity to contend for a championship, per sources cited by The Athletic. Other suitors reportedly included the Detroit Pistons.
Golden State finished last season with a disappointing 46–36 record, exiting in the play-in tournament’s opening round. Meanwhile, the Lakers won 47 games but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets.
Despite the recent setbacks, Hield believes in the Warriors’ prospects in a competitive Western Conference next season. He joins the Warriors’ backcourt as they aim to replace Klay Thompson’s shooting prowess following his departure to the Dallas Mavericks this offseason.
The Lakers have faced challenges in acquiring key players this offseason, having missed out on targets like Paul George, Thompson, and now Hield. As of Thursday, DeMar DeRozan, Miles Bridges, Tyus Jones, and Malik Beasley remain notable names available in free agency.
