France beаt Portugal even though Mbappé was absent from the penalty shootout. While Joao Felix missed his for Portugal, all five French takers—including Barcola—scored their penalties, therefore awarding the victory to “Les Bleus”.

Media and supporters of the French star were wondering repeatedly about the reasons Mbappe missed the penalty shootout against Portugal.

Mbappé discussed his choice not to take a penalty in the deciding shootout with reporters following the game: “We had previously discussed with the coach at the end of normal time. We decided to attempt it, but at half-time [in extra time], I informed him I was too exhausted and I had lost feeling. We have to go past that, I believe. Above all, as captain, you have to be continually active and supportive of your colleagues. Whatever happens, the key is that we win, as I have always said before contests. Though others considered it to be a joke, here we are. Though we are in the semi-finals and I am still quite thrilled even though I only scored one goal.

Real Madrid’s recent acquisition, Mbappé observed the game from the bench during the penalty shootout and offered his impressions on the experience: “It’s even more terrible without shooting,” he remarked. “You’re far from the goal, thus naturally I would want to visit there, but the boys shoot quite brilliantly. Actually, I now know individuals out there going through this. We seem to be somewhat outside, far away. There are screaming, hence we hardly hear the whistle. Fascinating!

When France plays Spain in the Euro 2024 semifinals on July 9, Mbappé will once more be on the starting lineup. La Roja won extra time 2-1 against Germany to qualify for the semi-finals.
