This offseason, the Dallas Mavericks signed Klay Thompson, a four-time NBA champion and star, effectively ending the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty.
Thompson chose the Dallas Mavericks over the Los Angeles Lakers, signing a three-year, $50 million contract to play alongside Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic rather than LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Now, the former Warriors guard and future Hall of Famer will play third fiddle to two excellent offensive players, creating floor spacing without taking on too much offensive responsibility.
However, there is one item to consider: Irving now wears No. 11 for the Mavericks, which Thompson has worn his whole career. Of course, he’s been able to maintain the same number because he has yet to change teams.
Thompson will wear the number 31 jersey in Dallas, according to the Mavericks’ formal announcement of his arrival.
Jason Terry, who helped the Mavericks win the NBA title in 2011, and Nick Van Exel have both worn jersey number 31. While Thompson’s No. 11 will be in the rafters in the Bay Area, he will be carving out a new part of his legacy with a new jersey number.
Of course, Thompson’s decision to forego a jersey number was likely an easy one, as he’ll be able to play a crucial role in a high-powered offence while competing for a championship, hoping to add a fifth ring to his collection.
The new trio in Dallas will undoubtedly be one of the most entertaining in the league as the Warriors prepare for a post-Thompson era, hoping to establish a contender one last time in Stephen Curry’s career.
Thompson has the opportunity to reconstruct his image after learning that he is ageing out of the league, and a new start could enable him return to form as a sniper.
