Kylian Mbappe, the captain of France, has come under fire from supporters after switching shirts with a player from Spain at halftime of their Euro 2024 semifinal match.
In the eighth minute of the Munich encounter, Mbappe received credit for a help when Randal Kolo Muani headed in one of his crosses. However, Spain responded with a wonder striker in Yamine Lamal and a deflected shot from Dani Olmo, giving them a 2-1 lead at the half.
With a Spain jersey in hand, Mbappe made his way up the steps and into the tunnel, as captured on camera, leaving supporters stunneԀ.
“Mbappe’s shirt swapping during halftime is embarrassing,” an X user commented on the video.
“Mbappe switching shirts during a Euro semifinal?” Indeed, this guy is not serious, a further admirer said.
A similar response came from another supporter who wrote: ‘Mbappe changing shirt at half time with a team that are beating them in the semis of the Euros,’ alongside a series of laughing face emojis.
Swapping shirts during a game has often split opinion, with some not being too bothered about it, while others believe it is a ridiculous idea and players should wait until after the game.
Manchester United legend Roy Keane falls into the latter category, and a couple of fans joked that he would be fuming after watching Mbappe’s behaviour.
‘Mbappe swapping shirts at half time, somewhere there is a Roy Keane screaming at a TV,’ one fan wrote on X.
‘Mbappe swapped shirts at half time. Keane would be fuming if this was an ITV game,’ another claimed.
Fortunately for Mbappe, the match was being shown on the BBC, meaning he escaped Keane’s wrath.
On the pitch, the 25-year-old looked much sharper after a quiet tournament that started with him breаking his nose in France’s opening match.
He set up Kolo Muani’s goal and generally looked much brighter, but he could do nothing to stop Yamal’s incredible equaliser.
Yamal cut inside onto his favoured left foot and curled the ball into the corner of the net from 25 yards.
The camera panned to Mbappe who was speechless as he simply gave a look of admiration for Yamal’s goal.
Mbappe had the chance to bring his side level late in the second half but his shot from inside the penalty area flew well over the bar.
His miss proved to be costly as Spain held on for a 2-1 victory to move into Sunday’s final where they will meet either England or the Netherlands.
