Giannis Antetokounmpo was honoured for bringing the Greek men’s basketball team to their first Olympics appearance since 2008.
According to Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Hellenic Olympic Committee has nominated Antetokounmpo as a flag bearer for the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony on the Seine River on July 26. The 29-year-old will be one of the first athletes to begin the Games, with race walker Antigoni Drisbioti, since Greece traditionally leads the parade of nations due to its long history with the Olympics.
According to Owczarski, he will be the first Black athlete in history to represent Greece in the Olympics.
Antetokounmpo and the Greek national team earned a spot in the Summer Games by defeating Croatia on Sunday. The Milwaukee Bucks star was noticeably emotional following the victory.
When the Olympics begin later this month, Antetokounmpo will have the opportunity to represent his native country on a global scale.
