Gary Neville made his debut as a DJ earlier today, teaming up with Tim Burgess, frontman of The Charlatans, at the Kendal Calling festival in Cumbria. This festival, which has featured headliners like Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds, The Streets, Paolo Nutini, and Sugababes, also welcomed Neville, the former Manchester United full-back.
While Neville was accustomed to performing in front of more than 70,000 fans at Old Trafford, today’s event presented a different kind of challenge. In a packed tent, he took part in the festivities by heading a beach ball into the enthusiastic crowd and appeared to dance along with the music.
Earlier this year, Neville admitted to never having DJed before. In an interview on Geoff Shreeves’ podcast, Football, Music and Me, he shared, “When I finished my football career, I sought out new challenges. I’m actually DJing with Tim at Kendal Calling—what am I doing? I’m trying to find a way out of it, but once I’ve committed, I can’t back out.”
Burgess had expressed excitement about the collaboration, noting, “I’m thrilled to DJ with Gary—he has great taste in music. The last time we were on stage together was when he joined The Charlatans on guitar. We might not perform any songs together, but an impromptu singalong could happen.”
