Manchester United players have been preparing for the Community Shield amid a defensive crisis. The Red Devils are set to face Manchester City in the season opener at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. However, manager Erik ten Hag faces challenges with three key defenders potentially sidelined.
Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were absent from recent training sessions, raising doubts about their availability for the match. Ten Hag revealed that Maguire missed the last pre-season game against Liverpool as a precaution and remains a doubt for the Community Shield. Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka are also uncertain, with Ten Hag indicating that their fitness will be evaluated closer to the match.
Additionally, Luke Shaw, who missed the US tour, will be assessed. Shaw, who participated in the Euros in Spain, recently returned to Carrington. Lisandro Martinez might be in contention, but Ten Hag noted that player involvement will depend on individual circumstances and their preparation during the off-season.
Long-term absentees Tyrell Malacia, Rasmus Hojlund, and summer signing Leny Yoro will miss the start of the Premier League season due to injuries. Wan-Bissaka could also miss the game if negotiations between Manchester United and West Ham United progress.
New signing Joshua Zirkzee, who recently joined training, could play a significant role in Hojlund’s absence. Despite the challenges, Ten Hag assured that the team fielded will be competitive. He emphasized, “The game is about another trophy. We will field a team capable of winning, but we will avoid taking unnecessary risks. We’ll decide on players’ roles—whether they start, come off the bench, or don’t play—based on their readiness.”
