Memphis Depay, who struggled during his time at Manchester United and has faced a tough summer after being released by Atletico Madrid, is currently posting training videos from Monaco in hopes of finding a new club. The 30-year-old Netherlands international, who had a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign despite his team reaching the semi-finals, remains without a club just ten days before the transfer window closes for most European teams.
In a recent Instagram video, Depay is seen performing hill sprints with a resistance band and working with a medicine ball. However, the response from fans has been less than encouraging. Comments have criticized his performance, with one user noting, “Well that Euro display didn’t help his case at all. Should be on a ball v running,” and another saying, “I’d say he’s massively overrated but I guess there’s a reason why he’s without a club. Never, ever rated him. Guy offers nothing.” A third added, “On his Euros display, he might be waiting around for a while.”
Adding to the controversy, Wayne Rooney recently recalled an incident during Euro 2024 when he had to address Depay’s off-field behavior. Rooney, who was covering the Netherlands’ match against France, remembered a time when Depay arrived at a reserve game in a Rolls Royce and a cowboy hat. Rooney expressed his dissatisfaction with Depay’s flashy appearance, emphasizing that while Depay worked hard in training, his off-field behavior was a concern.
In response to his critics, Depay has defended his time at Manchester United and his lifestyle choices. In a documentary, he reflected on his career and personal life, saying, “My whole life is upside down. They talk about the headlines in papers, me wearing a hat and all the fing s. They say, in Manchester I flopped. But let’s go, man. I drive a Rolls Royce, this is my life. I was not given anything, I have earned it all with both feet. I am not good, I am not bad. Just don’t forget to check my past, check my scars. I am a lion, I am a king. I have fashion in my blood and only big dreams. I don’t care what people think about me. It is my life and if I am the black sheep, so it is. I do what I want anyway.”
