Arsenal have indicated interest in Anthony Gordon, but the winger is expected to stay at Newcastle beyond Friday’s deadline, with preliminary negotiations on a new contract having begun.
We understand Gunners sporting director Edu is a big fan of the 23-year-old, who is on a list of players identified as future targets, and they may make an offer next summer.
Gordon is content in Newcastle, enjoys working with Eddie Howe, and has made his home in the North East with his small family. Discussions on an enhanced deal as a reward for last season’s outstanding performance have now begun.
However, there is no disputing that the club’s discussions with Liverpool at the end of June were disturbing, as the Magpies struggled to avoid a violation of PSR regulations and mulled selling Gordon to his boyhood club. The Reds declined to accept Newcastle’s terms, but their curiosity remained.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell has since joined St James’ Park, and he, like Howe, was determined not to lose Gordon this window. It means the England star will stay on Tyneside for at least this season.
