Alan Shearer, the iconic English footballer, has suggested that Erik ten Hag’s position as Manchester United’s manager could be at risk if the team doesn’t improve their performance in the next two fixtures.
Shearer remarked, “For Ten Hag to remain in charge past Christmas, Manchester United must make significant strides. His future could hinge on how the next two games turn out,” following United’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on September 1.
Even though Manchester United invested over $263 million in new players like Lenny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, and Matthijs de Ligt this summer, Ten Hag’s squad has struggled, losing two out of their first three league matches and currently languishing in 14th place.
Manchester United narrowly edged out Fulham 1-0 in their season opener but then fell to Brighton 2-1 and Liverpool 3-0.
Shearer commented, “Given the losses to Brighton and the heavy defeat to Liverpool, if Manchester United does not show considerable improvement in the next game or two, Ten Hag’s position will be under serious threat.”
He further noted, “Manchester United has shown substantial financial backing for Ten Hag. Although the exact figure is unclear, it’s likely over £500 million. Yet, there seems to be no noticeable change. There doesn’t appear to be a clear strategy under Ten Hag. Compare this to HLV Arne Slot’s brief stint at Liverpool; despite inheriting a better squad, Ten Hag has been at Old Trafford longer and spent heavily on players who aren’t even making an impact.”
In agreement with Shearer, former Premier League striker Chris Sutton believes Ten Hag could be at risk of being sacked if Manchester United doesn’t turn things around in September.
Sutton commented, “It’s no secret that Manchester United has been searching for a new manager without success, which is why Ten Hag is still in charge. Fans will be asking after the first three games: ‘Is there any noticeable improvement or progress under Ten Hag?’
The honest answer to both questions would be no. He’s secured a few trophies since joining Manchester United, but overall, the club has seemed to regress last season. The FA Cup victory saved his job, but there’s no doubt Ten Hag is aware that his future depends on a strong start to the season. Only a marked improvement can secure his position at Old Trafford.”
After the international break concludes on September 11, Manchester United will travel to Southampton on September 14 for a Premier League match. They will then host Barnsley in the third round of the League Cup, a competition Ten Hag previously won in his debut season with the club.
