Former Manchester United star Memphis Depay has signed with Brazilian club Corinthians. The Dutch forward, who was a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of the previous season, has agreed to a contract with Corinthians until December 2026.
Depay, 30, participated in all six of the Netherlands’ matches at Euro 2024 but was not selected for the current international window. Manager Ronald Koeman had also dropped Steven Bergwijn from the squad due to his transfer to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad from Ajax for £17.7 million. However, Koeman has indicated that Depay’s situation could be different, stating, “I disapproved of Steven Bergwijn’s move to Saudi Arabia, but with Memphis, it could be different. The level of the league in Brazil is different, so yes, he can still be part of the national team—provided he maintains his fitness and form.”
Koeman further explained Depay’s absence from the national team by noting, “It’s primarily because he doesn’t have a club. If you’re not playing football, you can’t be part of the national team.”
Regarding Bergwijn, Koeman remarked last week, “The book is basically closed on him. He knows how I feel about this. At 26, your main ambition should be sporting success, not financial gain. These are choices players make. I was never in that position because I could have gone to Barcelona. He could have stayed at Ajax, which isn’t a bad option. You have to respect his choice, but personally, I wouldn’t have moved.”
