Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana faced mayhem as he tried to leave the stadium following Cameroon’s 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe in Uganda on Tuesday night.
The excitement in Uganda was palpable, given the country’s large Manchester United fanbase—evidenced by a Facebook group with nearly 600,000 followers. Onana’s presence in Uganda had generated considerable buzz over the past few days.
The match was held at Namboole Stadium in Kampala, which is hosting Zimbabwe’s home AFCON qualifiers due to concerns about the quality of their own grounds. This meant that Ugandan United fans were eagerly anticipating Onana’s appearance at the stadium.
Onana had already caused a stir when the Cameroon team arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Sunday, with airport staff and security also eager for photos. The stands were filled with United jerseys as Onana maintained a clean sheet against Zimbabwe.
Despite Cameroon failing to build on their 1-0 win over Namibia earlier in the week, Onana’s multiple saves secured a 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe.
After the match, Onana’s attempt to leave the stadium was met with chaotic scenes. Hundreds of fans crowded around him, trying to catch a glimpse of the Premier League star. He was swiftly escorted into a Toyota Premio, with military personnel clearing a route for him through the crowd, leaving the team bus behind.
